When trying to learn a foreign language on Youtube, there’s one important thing you have to remember. Try to find channels where the Youtuber actually teaches you how to speak the language instead of one where they’re just showing off how well they speak it with a few fun location videos thrown in.
Some good channels which provide actual teaching include:
Coursera offers university level courses that can be audited. Many courses offer a payment option if you want a certificate or documentation. However, Coursera also offers excellent courses that can just be audited.
If you are a podcast junkie, NHK’s Easy Japanese provides a year’s worth of bite size Japanese lessons that have been carefully planned and are presented by two lively hosts.
The Japan Foundation
This series provides videos and activities to practice Japanese as you follow the adventures of Erin. Erin is a British student doing an exchange program in Japan. Even though the characters are all teenagers, everyone can learn a little Japanese from this series.
Edx, like Coursera, offers university level courses that can be audited. Current offerings include English, Chinese, Spanish and Italian. When you take an Edx course, be prepared to do a little homework.
If you’re looking for a fun video series, language exercises to practice or need to work on your listening skills, you’ll find something on the BBC website. A few of the languages that you can brush up on include: French, Spanish, Italian, German, Greek, Portuguese and Chinese.
Radio France International
Wow ! Radio France International has taken a great deal of care in developing studio-quality language learning resources that often include a story element. Students can choose from a wide selection of quizzes, exercises, podcasts and activities.
Memrise is a great place to get an intensive grammar workout or vocabulary workout in almost every language imaginable. Memrise uses SRI or spaced repetition to allow you to review and reinforce previously studied topics.
So if you’re thinking about studying a foreign language and wondering, “Where will I start?” these are just a few resources to kick start your dream of being bilingual. Have fun!
